What We Do Best

Earthsong is committed to making year-round and on-the-ground impact through our portfolio of research-based programs and our network of local chapters led by young people trained in our methods and values. Below, you will find more information about our six key program areas. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas, please feel free to reach out through the contact information at the top of the page!

Program Spotlight:

The Solar Cinema

This program was developed to increase on-the-ground reach while minimizing the amount of money, volunteers, and time required to put on an event. We can leverage our existing portfolio of educational content and visit multiple schools or communities in a single day! A single production reaches thousands of people. The solar cinema has quickly become a staple in a local chapter’s toolkit.

Impact Media

Every project begins by gathering the relevant artists, partners, and other experts to discuss the topic at hand and the best way to depict it to our listeners and learners. Once the topic is well understood, the musicians begin to develop the rhythms, melodies, and lyrics for the song. When preparing their work, artists are encouraged to stick to a few key principles that define and unify our look, feel, and impact.

Local genres always take precedence. We want each song to inspire learning and action in communities surrounding its creation, and this means appealing to musical styles that are easily enjoyed there. Once the texture of the song has been developed, we are sure to allow room for verses, several repetitions of the chorus, and a bridge. Each of these components plays a specific role in delivering the message contained within carefully crafted lyrics.

Live Events & Workshops

While we firmly believe in the power of reach and public dialogue through broadcast and social media channels, we also recognize the importance of getting up close with the communities we serve. We continue to design and test different forms of live events and workshops in schools and community settings. Below are a few of our favorites.

An eco-concert is a full-on educational experience through music. Every single song performed carries a message! In Our Music, Our Environment, we followed up each song with a focus group survey and compared those results with our door-to-door pre-event canvassing results. We found that 77% of our attendants had learned something new and of value to their sustainable rural existence.

Music festivals gather hundreds or thousands of people for a meaningful and shared experience. Our mission and vision putting music to work for the planet and its people coalesce perfectly with this environment, and these massive events provide a massive audience to connect and engage with! We have hosted informational dialogues and jam sessions, spearheaded sustainable waste management, and even hosted #CrowdStudios, recording anyone who walks by into a shared, environmentally themed music video production!

Capacity Building

We have seen the exponential impact made possible by all forms of capacity building, including training, professional development, and peer-to-peer mentoring. With a special focus on youth empowerment, we are scaling at a rate that guarantees continued impact on the ground in each program country with a local chapter presence.

Most recently, we hosted a 5-day training summit for our chapter leaders, during which their input and efforts were included in the brand-new Earthsong Handbook. This 60-page document serves as a reference for our team and chapter leaders, and as a guide for anyone in the world who wants to use music to effect positive change in the most impactful and strategic way possible. Its sections include Getting Started, our Programs, Production best practices, Resource Mobilization and more!

ESD Curriculum

Everything we do goes to benefit one or both of our two target audiences: community members and students. We believe in the power of positive, creative, and innovative education for students not only to stimulate and activate their minds, but to reach their families and communities through a voice and channel far more powerful than others.

We are designing Education for Sustainable Development curriculum in alignment with our program countries’ standards, in order to equip teachers with the best tools and programs possible for their classes in science, geography, ecology, and more, while leveraging their numbers to reach an exponential number of students with our content and materials!

Educational Technology

We believe in and respect the teaching community, and we want to offer anything we can to make their crucial jobs developing the next generation of minds easier! We want to make it simple to reach students in a powerful and musically engaging way regardless of a teacher’s experience with current sustainable development topics, musicality and music programming, or student engagement through positive methods.

We are building an app to make our eco-musical curriculum available both online and in the form of an off-grid tablet-based system for under-resourced schools in the developing world. This swipe-and-tap based educational interface, along with training and gamification components, is the ultimate tool for delivering Education for Sustainable Development through music!

Advocacy

This new focus area in our program portfolio has us very excited to get strategic in our approach and partnerships to inform and mobilize the public towards rallying political will in the direction of sustainable development. Advocacy topics we are currently discussing with our chapter leaders include initiating plastic bag bans, calling for comprehensive climate change legislature and implementation, and the designation of new protected wild spaces.
